New workspace developments have been given a boost with Rural Renaissance funds through the Workspace Programme. Significant capital investments – mainly to private businesses - have been awarded to ten projects across the county for the practical conversion of redundant buildings, to help bring them back into productive use.
Several farms are taking advantage of this programme to diversify through a number of projects: at Suddon Grange Farm, Wincanton, the project to develop a redundant stone and red brick tiled traditional agricultural building into quality office accommodation for letting is nearing completion. Near Ilminster, a project at Horton Cross Farm will redevelop a range of redundant farm buildings to establish a hospitality centre for businesses and the local community to include micro-enterprise office space, cafe and conference facilities.
Phase 1 of the Bridge Farm Barns project at Pylle will develop a range of large former agricultural buildings into warehousing to enable an established Somerset business to expand. Phase 2 will entail the renovation of other buildings for food preparation and office accommodation.
At Podimore Recycling workspace funds are being used for the conversion of redundant milking parlour and dairy to office building with staff facilities including rest room, washroom and kitchen facilities and essential security staff accommodation.
Other workspace projects include the Beinghuman Warehouse which involves the refurbishment of a disused warehouse in a former tannery building to provide studio spaces for lease to artists & craftspeople, complementary therapists and to other small-scale community-centred start-up businesses.
These are just some of the projects funded under the Workspace Programme funded through Rural Renaissance.
