PROJECT SUMMARY
Hidden Somerset aims to bring together small businesses and community organisations to cooperate about promoting their tourist related services on the internet. This will be achieved through the establishment of a dedicated website for small scale, little known tourist-related businesses which will highlight the hidden gems within Somerset. The project will be piloted in the Levels and Moors area with the aim of being rolled out across the County.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Hidden Somerset is a web based project developed to promote the lesser known places in Somerset and encourage tourists and local residents to explore the communities, businesses and attractions in these hidden areas. The project is funded through the Somerset Rural Renaissance Project and the Levels and Moors Leader Plus.
The project was initially conceived during the Foot and Mouth Crisis in 2001 which highlighted the fragility of rural communities and the need to support communities and businesses within them. Hidden Somerset promotes the more interesting and meaningful places in the county, areas which summarise the character and uniqueness of Somerset.
Visitors can plan all aspects of their visit in Somerset using the site, including where to eat, what to do and where to stay. The site features an events page which offers visitors opportunities to join in with local courses and community events. The website is constantly growing with new entries joining the site on a regular basis.
The project supports a wide range of businesses particularly those who do not already have a presence on the internet and are looking for alternative and affordable ways of promoting themselves. The site also aims to work as a networking facility allowing businesses and communities on the site to share ideas and tips.
